I remember when the phenomenon known as Twilight took over the world. I didn't hear about it much until the first movie hit DVD. That's when I rented it and then ran out to buy every book in the saga. I have enjoyed the Twilight books and movies so far. Some people are diehard you have to read the book before you see the movie people. I know this will probably really irk some, but I like the Harry Potter movies way more than at least the one Harry Potter book that I didn't even manage to get through. I saw the movies first.
With The Hunger Games coming to theaters next month, I'm wondering if I should go ahead and read at least the first book or if it will matter. For those of you who have read the book(s), what do you think?
If I had the time, I'd probably read the book first but as it goes, I'll most likely see the movie first. However, in this case, it will probably be a good thing as I'm one of those THE BOOK IS ALWAYS BETTER. This way, I'll win both ways!
ReplyDeleteI have also heard that the second and especially the third book is lacking what the first book had as absolutely amazing. So I'm even more curious to read and find out why others think that!
I'm leaning towards squeezing it in within the next month. I'm not even sure yet if I'm going to see it in theaters. They're so expensive now! Over twenty bucks for Brian and I to go. Crazy! That's really interesting that people didn't seem to like the second and third as much. Who wants to keep reading if it gets worse?? I may have to see for myself. Thanks for stopping by, Wanita! Did Mikayla get to read her book today? I was so excited that she was so excited :) Very sweet.
ReplyDeleteI've read the trilogy (the whole thing is great) so I look forward to seeing the movie. I always find it fascinating what they pick to use and dump for the book version when writing the screenplay. Sometimes it can be disappointing and other times the screenwriter actually finds a better way to tell the story. I think the perfect example of this is The Devil Wears Prada. The book wasn't very good in my opinion. But the screenplay was amazing and really turned the weak plot points in the book to the movies strength.
ReplyDeleteSo I vote read the book first!
Anne- I haven't read The Devil Wears Prada. I didn't even know it was a book to tell you the truth. I love, love, love the movie though! Meryl Streep is so fierce! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteWell, I read the Twilight books first, and I'm glad I did, because I don't think the movies compare. But there haven't been some movies I've seen and read the book afterwards. The Time Traveler's Wife was this way. I thought the book was horrible.
ReplyDeleteBut The Hunger Games is a genre I don't normally read, so I have no desire TO read the books. I'd rather see the movies.
Oh, and I agree--my son and I tried to read one of the Harry Potter movies and we both agreed that the movies were WAY better. The book bored us to tears, but we loved the movies.
Joanne- The Time Traveler's Wife was a bit sad for me. I love Rachel Macadams(sp?). She's got to be my favorite actress! I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't like the Harry Potter books. Correction. I'm glad I'm not the only writer who didn't like the Harry Potter books. :)
ReplyDeleteI much prefer to read the book first if I have the time. There are so many subleties to a character I dont think it is possible to convey them on screen. It's almost impossible to show what a character is thinking. In a perfect world I like to read the book first and then see the movie.
ReplyDeletePaul- Very true. There are so many times when I've seen a movie and the actor is making some strange expression that takes me forever to figure out what he/she is trying to convey. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.
DeleteRead it. You'll have it finished within a day. I promise! Harry Potter + Twilight + The Giver = Hunger Games. You can't go wrong with that!
ReplyDeleteHmmm...that's pretty convincing. I'm finishing up a Nicholas Sparks' then I'll have to start The Hunger Games. Thanks for stopping by, Amber!!
DeleteAwesome! We could totally have a mini book club discussion about it! Wish we could go see the movie together. I think the last movie we went to was The Notebook!
DeleteA mini book club convo sounds fun. Yes, me too! It looks like a good movie. The Notebook, still one of my favorites! Too bad we are forever away now :(
